CLOUD VETERINARY CENTER

Doctor

  • Dr. Dennis F Cloud , DVM

I can thank my parents for my being a veterinarian.  My mom and dad would let me bring home any of God's creatures from sickly kittens, mangy dogs, to orphan robins.  They let me raise homing pigeons on our roof in south city.   I cannot tell you how many splints I placed on broken wings and injured legs.

I attended Veterinary School at the University of Missouri, graduating in 1968.  From 1968 to 1970 I pursued postdoctural study at Colorado State University as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service.  In 1971 I started Rock Road Animal Hospital as a one-doctor practice.  Happily that facility has grown to five doctors, 30 employees, 13,000 clients and 26,000 patients.  Rock Road Animal Hospital was honored by being included in a study by Hills Pet Foods of the 100 top veterinary practices in the United States.

In 1998 I founded Cloud Veterinary Center in St. Charles County.  Our mission at Cloud Veterinary Center is to provide Affordable Wellness and the Best Surgical and Medical Care possible.

    Education and Associations:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, 1968 (Magna Cum Laude)

    Member American Animal Association

Member of Missouri Veterinary Medical Association

    Member of Pfizer Biological Board

    Family:

Married to the beautiful Sharon since 1967, six wonderful children, ages ranging from 34 to 22, Kellie, Allison, Jessica, Sarah, Patrick, and Katie.  Four precious grandchildren, Katelyn, Kellie, Garrett, and Charlie.

    Personal Pets:

I have three Labrador Retrievers.  I realize a vet should know better.  They are Pearl, a black female, age 10, Maude, a yellow female, age 8, and Maggie, a 3 year old black female, and one female loving parrot named Meyer.  I am also part owner(with the rest of the staff) of Big Daddy and Peanut, the resident hospital cats.

    Personal Interests

I enjoy anything outdoors.  I coach youth soccer for the Busch Soccer Club.  I love to bicycle, trout fish, and duck hunt.

I am a 1999 graduate of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. I have worked at CVC since I graduated and really enjoy the challenges of my job.

I grew up on a farm outside of Wentzville, therefore, animals have always been a major part of my life. I was very involved in 4-H where I showed cattle, horses, chickens and goats.

    Areas of Interest:

My main interests are surgery, both soft tissue and orthopedic, ultrasonagraphy, and radiology. I also enjoy the challenge of researching the hard medical cases in animals and getting to see the results of my work. Doing physical exams on healthy puppies and kittens seem to brighten every day.

    Personal Pets:

That would have to be my dog Mozzie. Mozzie is a 3 year old Australian Shepherd. Her natural instinct is to herd cattle, but she gets a little confused and will usually chase them in the wrong direction.

    Personal Interests:

Outside of veterinary medicine, I enjoy spending time with my husband Jamie and son Reed on our farm in Bellflower, MO. We raise cattle and specialize in club calves, which are used by children for show steer at the County and State Fairs.

We are currently building a new house on our farm. Reed loves the cattle and driving the tractor. We are expecting another son in December. In my spare time I enjoy gardening, the outdoors and spending time with my family.

  • Dr. Michael Balke , DVM

Like most veterinarian's, my career choice was made at an early age. While I did want to be Superman for a while, I always thought that being a veterinarian was just as action packed and exciting.

Ever since I can remember animals have always been a part of my life. Whether it was visiting my grandfather's farm to milk cows or chase sheep, or trying to train my dogs to pull my sled through the snow, life has always included animals. Our veterinarian, when I was growing up, knew I had an interest in possibly becoming a vet someday and he would always call me "Dr. Mike." I was pretty proud of this title and I became the animal expert in our family rescuing orphaned birds and bunnies with the assistance of my parents and sister.

Throughout high school and college I took jobs that allowed me to work closely with animals in the hope I would go to veterinary school someday. One of the best jobs I had was ultrasounding pigs and sheep at county fairs throughout Missouri. I got to meet a lot of great people and learn so much at the same time.

    EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Science, Biology - University of Missouri-Columbia, 1999
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine - University of Missouri-Columbia, 2003

    AREAS OF INTEREST:

I love all aspects of this profession but especially oncology (cancer) and orthopedic cases.

    PERSONAL PETS:

I have two wonderful dogs. Ruby, a three-year old German Shepard and Bernie, a three-year old Beagle mix. They love to play and make new friends.

    FAMILY:

I have a great family consisting of my girlfriend Jody, my father in Illinois and sister Erin and her husband Shane and their two little ones, Julia and William in Colombia, Missouri.

    PERSONAL INTEREST:

I love spending time outdoors fishing, hunting and camping. I also enjoy cooking about as much as I like to eat.

People often ask, “When did you decide to become...?” I personally cannot remember a time that I did not want to be a veterinarian. I do remember thinking it would be great to be an astronaut/vet, or a racecar driver/vet but veterinary medicine always figured in. We lived in the suburbs of Chicago, so my exposure to large animals was pretty limited and it seemed natural to develop an interest in dogs and cats.

I enjoyed science and biology classes during high school, and was accepted to a VICA program that allowed senior students to go to school for half the day and work in the afternoon. My job was an assistant and kennel boy in a local clinic. This experience confirmed that small animal medicine was for me. One of the vets in that clinic summed it up when he told me, “This is the best job there is. I get paid to play with people’s vets!”

I went on to the University of Illinois as a biology major. I continued to work toward vet school, volunteering with large animal clinics and working in labs. I eventually got my degree and went on to graduate with my DVM in 1992.

I started working with Dr. Cloud at the Rock Road Animal Hospital and it has been an enjoyable and educational experience.

    Education:

    -          B.S. in physiology, University of Illinois, Urbana. 1986

    -          D.V.M. University of Illinois, Urbana. 1992

    -          Advanced courses in fracture fixation, University of Georgia. 1999

    -          Cruciate Ligament Repair Course, University of Georgia. 1999

    -          Member of American Animal Hospital Assoc., Greater St. Louis Veterinary Medical Association.

    Areas of Interest:

I enjoy all aspects of medicine but especially orthopedic cases and pediatrics (you have to love playing with puppies and kittens).

    Family Pets:

Trapper, a 12 yr. old mixed breed dog. Casper, a 9 yr. old lab. Pete, a 5 yr. old Great Pyrenees mix. Fang, a 17 yr. old cat and Fred, a 3 yr. old cat.

    A quote stolen from Dr. Cloud;

If you are bored doing veterinary medicine, you are not paying attention.”
